Training Opportunities

All foster parents in the state of Alabama are required to complete 15 hours of training each year. Included here is a list of resources throughout the state to access quality training to equip you with skills and support to care for children who are in or have been in the foster care system.

Events

Annual AFAPA Conference

The Annual AFAPA Conference, held at Shocco Springs Conference Center in May each year, provides high-quality workshops for foster, kinship, and adoptive parents at an affordable price.

AFAPA Region 4 Conference – August 28 & 29, 2020

AFAPA training is scheduled for August 28th and 29th at Shocco Springs. Overnight stay for one night is paid for. This is the only in-person training scheduled for this year, and it is available to the first 160 participants to register. Foster parents from any region may attend. Training will begin at 1:00 PM on Friday August 28th and 8:30 AM to 4:30PM on Saturday 29th. A registration deposit of $35 is required for each registration. Direct any questions to afapa@afapa.org.

Organizations

Children’s Aid Society

The Children’s Aid Society of Alabama provides training for foster and adoptive parents. They additionally offer web-based training on a variety of topics, which can be viewed on your schedule. Click here for more information.

Dr. John DeGarmo Foster Care

AFAPA has contracted with drjohndegarmofostercare.com to provide Alabama foster parents unlimited access to his website with 50 hours of webinars and training modules. Also included are downloadable books pertaining to foster care. Certificates will be available for each class completed.

Licensed Alabama foster parents may choose to receive access to this site OR Foster Parent College (FPC; see below). For access, send an email to afapa@afapa.org with name and email address and whether you want FPC or Dr John DeGarmo website.

Foster Parent College

AFAPA will be offering foster parents unlimited access to all Foster Parent College online trainings at no cost ( www.fosterparentcollege.com ). These trainings will count as training hours for your foster home approval and you can request a certificate for each class completed.
